Definition of Catalogue 


According to J.D Brown - An explanatory, logical, systematic list to find the texts and the subject matter described in the them. It is a table and key and it is limited to the texts stores in a particular library.


According to S.R. Ranganathan - Library catalogue is a tool which provides information to the readers about the collection in the library.

A list of documents in a library or in a collection forming a portion of it known as -library catalogue.


According to C.A. Cutter - Library list is a list of books arranged according to a definite plan.

Catalogue is referred as Tool.


Library Catalogue: History & Development


1. Panizzi/British Museum Code (1841):- 

  • This Was the World's first cataloguing code.
  • Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879) with his two associates -"J Winter Junes and Edward" Formulated the first version of famous 91 rules in 1837,was accepted in 1839 and was published in 1841.
  • The latest edition (1936) of British Museum Code contains only 41 rules.  
  • "Rules for compiling the catalogue of Printed Books, Maps and Music in British Museum" Introduced by - Anthony Panizzi.
  • Sir Anthony Panizzi who was Librarian of British Museum (Now the British Library)

2. Jewett's Rules/39 Rules (1852):- 

  • Jewett Rules Introduced by - Charles C. Jewett
  • Charles Coffin Jewett (1816-1868) was an American Librarian in 1848 becoming the Librarian Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute before being appointed superintendent of the Boston Public Library in 1858.
  • At about 1850,The American Libraries seriously considered the need to bring out a code of cataloguing rules. 
  • Jewett, Librarian of the Smithsonian Institute prepared a code of 39 Rules in 1852.
  • These Rules were modelled After Panizzi Rules and issued under the Title "Smithsonian Report on the construction of Catalogue of Libraries and their publication by means of separate stereotyped titles, with Rules and Examples." 

3. Prussian Instruction Pin Code (1899)

In English -It is published as the Prussian Instructions: Rules for Alphabetical Catalogue of the Prussian Libraries in 1938 by university of Michigan press.

4. Rules for dictionary catalogue RDC/Cutter's rules (1876)
  • 1876 is an epoch making year in the history of cataloguing, for in this year Charles Ammi Cutter published Rules for a Dictionary Catalogue (RDC) containing 205 Rules.
  • The latest 4th edition was published in 1904 form Washington. This edition contains 369 rules.
  • Henry A. sharp has evaluated this code as "The first code of complete cataloguing practice for every kind of entry in a Dictionary Catalogue.
  • C.A Cutter is referred as father of Dictionary Catalogue.
  • Dr. S.R. Ranganathan has remarked him as Genius and his work RDC as classic and immortal.
5.AA Code [Anglo-American] (1908)

  • Cataloguing Rules: Author and Title entries, compiled by committees of the Library Association and the ALA, published as American Edition and British Edition.
  • The American Library Association [1876] and Library Association [1877] issued independent set of Rules in 1878 and 1883 Respectively. Both decided to issue a combined code to secure greater uniformity in Cataloguing between English speaking areas. It was issued in 1908.
  • L.S. Jast and Henry Guppy, the Two eminent British Librarians and Melvil Dewey Representing the American Libraries played a significant role in producing the joint code.
  • The 174 Rules were in Both edition of American and British.
  • The ALA Continued alone, producing a draft code in 1941,the Final version Appeared in 1949.
6. Vatican Code [1931]

  • Vatican Library: Rules for the Catalogue of printed Books published in Italian in 1931, 2nd edition 1939. 
  • It was developed by Vatican Library
  • In English Language Vatican code was published in1948 by ALA.
  • Vatican code was prepared by the American Libraries J.C.M. Hanson and W.W. Bishop.

7. Dziatzka code (1886)

  • In 1886 , Prof. K Dziatzka, a German Librarian published his code which was Translated into English by an American Librarian K.A. Linderfelt and published in1890.

8. ALA [American Library Association] Cataloguing Rules [1949]

  • ALA Cataloguing Rules for Author and Titles. Chicago,ALA,1949.
  • ALA Cataloguing Rules (1949) was Developed by American Library Association.

2. CIP [Cataloguing in Publication]

✔ The Library of Congress started Cataloguing in publication (CIP) July 1971. The purpose of the cataloguing in publication program is to serve the Nation's Libraries by Cataloguing Books in advance of publication.

✔ " Cataloguing in publication" [CIP] was Termed as prenatal Cataloguing by S.R. Ranganathan.

✔ Prenatal Cataloguing implies - Centralized Cataloguing

✔ Prenatal Cataloguing Means -Cataloguing in Source

✔ The Cataloguing in publication program (CIP) was established by the Library of congress in 1971. A catalogue in publication record is a Bibliographic Record prepared by the Library of Congress for a Book that has not yet been published. When the Book is published, The publisher includes the CIP Data on the copyright page there by facilitating quick Book Processing.
